Congressman Jim Moran, Delegate Ken Plum Expected to Attend
(Oakton, Va., Jan. 30, 2014) Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) and its volunteer corps of Certified Application Counselors (CACs) will gather tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 1, at 9:00 a.m., at 6402 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church, in the B-Level Conference Room, for a volunteer appreciation program.
Congressman Jim Moran and Delegate Ken Plum are expected to attend, offering a perspective from both Federal and State legislatures. Additionally Melissa Herd, director of external affairs from Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, will provide some insight from CMS.
NVFS has been at the forefront of helping residents sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The agency rallied a coalition of nonprofit partners in the area to ensure as many residents as possible are covered. These nonprofits have recruited volunteers to become CACs, providing assistance to applicants through in-person, one-on-one appointments. NVFS currently manages 13 locations where individuals can receive personal assistance with a CAC for affordable health insurance.
Since October 2013, NVFS has assisted more than 500 clients with health insurance, and will continue with this assistance until Open Enrollment ends March 31. For appointments, clients can contact NVFS at 571-748-2580.
NVFS, a nonprofit organization serving our community for 90 years, currently assists more than 36,000 individuals and families annually. “Along with food and shelter, health is one of the foundations a family needs to thrive,” says Mary Agee, NVFS president and CEO. “NVFS is committed to helping our vulnerable neighbors understand what this new system means for them and getting them signed up before the deadline. It’s not only the law, but also a promise of stabilizing families who might be just one medical diagnosis away from financial crisis.”
