NVFS Receives $50,000 Grant from Women’s Foundation

Oakton, VA – Northern Virginia Family Service is a proud recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Washington Are Women’s Foundation to advance the Training Futures workforce development program. The award, announced yesterday by the Women’s Foundation, is a part of its Stepping Stones Initiative, focusing on improving the ability of women to find family-sustaining jobs.

Training Futures is a flagship workforce development program that includes a rigorous 23-week curriculum focused on moving people out of minimum-wage positions and into living-wage office careers. Students of the program are able to earn up to 18 college credits through a partnership with Northern Virginia Community College. The program has been highlighted as one of the most effective workforce development programs in the country by the Aspen Institute.

“We are so grateful to the Women’s Foundation for their support,” says NVFS President and CEO, Mary Agee. “We view this grant as a positive affirmation of the 15-year legacy of success that we have built through Training Futures.”

“By investing in effective nonprofits working in these areas, we’re helping our region’s most vulnerable families access the resources they need to thrive,” said Nicky Goren, president of The Women’s Foundation. “We have the potential to end poverty in the DC metro area by transforming the role economically disadvantaged women and their families play in our economic future.”

Northern Virginia Family Service is planning to expand the Training Futures program by opening a new class in Prince William County next year.
