(Oakton, Va. – March 30, 2015) The board of directors of Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) announced that Stephanie Berkowitz has been promoted to president and CEO. Berkowitz, who now serves as NVFS’ senior vice president of programs, brings more than 20 years of nonprofit sector experience to the position, including 15 years in leadership positions. She will assume her new role on July 1, 2015.
“Stephanie brings a unique combination of insight, innovation and passion for NVFS’ work,” Board Chair Misti Mukherjee said in the announcement. “Her wealth of experience and demonstrated leadership of serving those in need will empower NVFS to promote community cooperation while continuing its legacy of empowering individuals and families to improve their quality of life.”

Berkowitz holds a B.A. in psychology from Lafayette College and a master’s of social work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. She has served on numerous community coalitions focused on improving opportunities for children and families in Northern Virginia, and currently serves on the board of directors for HomeAid Northern Virginia and the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board.

Stephanie Berkowitz will succeed Mary Agee, who joined the staff of NVFS in 1972 and is retiring after leading NVFS for 28 years.
