NVFS Celebrates 2014 National Volunteer Week

(Oakton, Va., April 4, 2014)  Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) will join in the 2014 National Volunteer Week with recognition activities for current volunteers and service events to encourage others to get involved.

“NVFS simply wouldn’t function without its volunteers. They are truly the backbone of our agency, enriching our clients’ lives while providing critical support for our hard-working staff,” said Mary Agee, President and CEO. Last year nearly 4,000 volunteers donated 63,463 hours of service to NVFS at a value of over $1.56 million. “Our volunteers play an integral role in helping us provide hope for the families we serve. Not only do we need the helping hands, but we also want volunteering to be a meaningful experience for our volunteers.”

NVFS 2014 National Volunteer Week events include:

Monday, April 7: Coffee and Community Service at our Clock Tower thrift shop in Falls Church.

Wednesday, April 9: Working up an appetite at our Save ‘N’ Serve thrift shop in Manassas with lunch at Panera following the event.

Friday, April 11: Community service at our Clock Tower thrift shop in Centreville followed by Karaoke and wine tasting at The Winery at Bull Run.

Saturday, April 12: Service Saturday: Youth volunteer groups will be at all three thrift shop locations celebrating Global Youth Service Day.

NVFS traces its roots to volunteers who, in 1924, noticed that poor children in their Alexandria community had no coats and their families had no coal to heat their homes. Since addressing those basic, but critically important needs, NVFS continues to address and adapt to the changing needs to communities throughout the region.
