Key factors driving us to act
The mental health crisis.
28% of adults in the region—500,000 people— are living with active symptoms of anxiety or depression, a fourfold increase from 2019. 70,000 people who want therapy or counseling are unable to get it.
The housing cost burden
67% of Northern Virginians with low incomes (less than $50,000 per year for a family of four) spend over half of their income on rent, mortgage, taxes, fees, and basic utilities.
The uneven opportunity landscape
Social and racial divides remain acute in Northern Virginia, where profound disparities in education, income, and housing deeply affect life expectancy and health outcomes.
The early childhood education gap.
Only 29% of NOVA children ages 3-4 at or near poverty are enrolled in preschool—the second lowest rate of preschool enrollment in the country.

Timeline
Founding of United Charities (NVFS’ original name)
Overwhelming need in Alexandria for food, clothing and fuel spur the founding of United Charities (NVFS’ original name) by community residents.
Expanding our reach
NVFS increases its service area beyond Alexandria to include the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William.
New service areas created
New services are created, including the Neighborhood Development Program, which helps tenants with landlord disputes and works on legislative issues.
Job training and beyond
Services expand to include job training, medical care access, positive youth mentoring, and child abuse prevention programs.
Trauma recovery services to 9/11 survivors
NVFS provides trauma recovery services to survivors and those impacted by the September 11th attack on the Pentagon through the September 11 Survivors’ Fund.
Supporting immigrant communities
Through a merger with the Center for Multicultural Human Services, the NVFS Multicultural Center launches, ensuring important services for immigrant communities, including access to basic needs, mental health supports, and immigrant legal services.
NVFS merges with SERVE
NVFS and SERVE Inc. merge to create a continuum of human services designed to move families out of homelessness and poverty toward greater independence.
Responding to COVID-19
NVFS responds to the COVID-19 crisis by distributing nearly $5M to more than 1,000 families and expands mental health supports across service areas.
100 years of service
NVFS celebrates 100 years of service to Northern Virginia. As the next century of service begins, the NVFS Fund for Families fuels growth and stability for the next generation of families in our community.
NVFS merges with Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN)
NVFS and Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia merge, expanding comprehensive support services to include enhanced child and family wellbeing initiatives for youth and families.
