Bringing Fun, Food and Freshness to the SERVE Campus
Thank you to Catherine Elfers, Anne Young, Payton McGoldrick, Colin Russell, Kiki Ross and Sarah Ross for helping us kick off summer camp at the SERVE Family Shelter on June 20! Kids enjoyed arts and crafts, outdoor games, music and dancing, and snacks.
Thank you to the Bull Run Kiwanis Club bringing out a smoker from The Bone for a delicious barbeque cookout for shelter guests at the SERVE Family Shelter.
Thank you to Shorepoint for celebrating its one-year anniversary with a service project at our SERVE Campus. Employees and their family members deep-cleaned the kitchen in the shelter, spread rubber mulch in the shelter playground, and helped in the Hunger Resource Center and administration building with other projects.
Thank you to first-time volunteers from CohnReznick for providing two brand new bikes for our shelter bike program and assisting with an ongoing job to update our SERVE administration building. Because of them, we are one step closer to having a vibrant work space for our staff who work so hard to help our clients.
Thank you to Vienna Presbyterian Church Youth for collecting items to stuff welcome-home baskets for our shelter guests! They assembled their baskets at our Oakton headquarters and learned more about homelessness through their project.
Creating Opportunity and Masterpieces at the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center
Welcome, Vasheka Oliveras, our newest job coach at the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center! Vasheka will be helping clients with cover letters, job applications and soft skills toward long- and short-term employment and career goals.
Thank you to Eileen Moore and Sue McIntyre from Abrakadoodle, who came out to the shelter to lead children in an art lesson all about bold colors and round shapes — in the style of the artist Hundertwasser. The children enjoyed putting their own spin on the bold colors and shapes, and created new masterpieces.
Developing Young Minds through Early Childhood Development Programs
Thank you to Fors Marsh Group for hosting a field day at our Head Start center during recess. The kids loved the popsicles, parachute, sit-and-bounce balls, ribbon dancing, temporary tattoos and bubbles!
Thank you to Teresa and Joel Kaplan of the Kaplan Family Foundation for Children’s Literacy for joining us at our Vermont Street Early Head Start facility in Arlington, and the Healthy Families playgroups in Prince William County and Arlington to lead story time and give out books!
Thank you to first-time volunteers from Oath for assembling shape robot craft kits at their office for our Head Start students to make in class as part of their day of service.
Taking Inventory at Our Thrift Stores
Thank you to United Bank and Capital One for helping our finance team and thrift shop staff at our Centreville and Falls Church locations to help with their annual inventory count. Thank you also to CohnReznick for helping to sort and organize donations.
