Head Start programs empower children to succeed in both school and life through personalized learning experiences. At the heart of these initiatives lies the establishment of solid foundations for early learning.
“Head Start and Early Head Start programs are free, federally funded programs designed to promote school readiness for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from families that meet income eligibility requirements.”—ChildCare.gov
Head Start recognizes the crucial role of families, who are a child’s first and most influential teachers, in nurturing robust relationships essential for this early learning phase. The program’s effectiveness is evident in its comprehensive approach, encompassing critical domains such as approaches to learning, social and emotional development, language and literacy, cognition, and physical development.

What’s at the Heart of Head Start?
Learning through play and creativity is a cornerstone of Head Start, where guided activities are imbued with each child and family’s cultural and linguistic heritage. This inclusive approach ensures that children learn in safe and stimulating indoor and outdoor environments.
The program’s dedication to progress monitoring through ongoing screenings and assessments, along with its commitment to fully include children with disabilities, underscores its holistic approach to early education.
The benefits of Head Start are far-reaching, providing children with the necessary tools and support for their developmental journey. Here are the cornerstones of the Head Start programs:
- Establishing Strong Foundations for Early Learning: Head Start prioritizes establishing robust relationships as the bedrock for early learning. These relationships are nurtured through close engagement with families, who are recognized as a child’s first and most influential teachers.
- Effective Learning Practices: The program implements effective practices designed to enhance children’s growth across five critical domains: approaches to learning, social and emotional development, language and literacy, cognition, and physical development.
- Learning Through Play and Creativity: Head Start encourages learning through play, creative expression, and guided activities incorporating each child and family’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
- Safe and Stimulating Environments: Welcoming learning environments are meticulously designed indoors and outdoors to be organized and secure.
Head Start Also Promotes Health and Wellness
Head Start’s approach to child development extends beyond academic readiness, emphasizing children’s overall health and well-being. The programs include promoting physical activity, providing healthy and nutritious meals, and ensuring children receive essential medical screenings.
The program’s focus on oral health, mental health services, and resilience-building strategies further demonstrates the comprehensive nature of the benefits of Head Start. These initiatives cater to children’s immediate health needs and assist families in understanding and supporting their child’s health and behavioral health requirements. Such holistic care ensures a well-rounded development for children enrolled in Head Start programs.
Family Well-Being Through Head Start Programs
The benefits of Head Start also extend to the families of enrolled children. The program offers robust support to families, including parenting strategies, assistance during pregnancy, and help in achieving financial, housing, employment, and educational goals.
Head Start’s emphasis on family engagement, celebrating the role of fathers and male caregivers, and advocating for lifelong support for children further highlights its dedication to enhancing family well-being and ensuring a supportive environment for both children and parents.
Approximately 22% of the program staff comprise current or former Head Start parents, reflecting the program’s commitment to creating a career pathway in early care and education.
A Success Story from NVFS and Head Start: Sezounde’s Journey
Sezounde’s journey with NVFS’ Head Start programs is a powerful illustration of the program’s transformative impact.
As a single mother facing numerous challenges, her life changed significantly after enrolling her children in the Early Head Start home-based program. Through NVFS’ comprehensive support, Sezounde made changes, with the help of her NVFS mentor Pam, that now positively impact her life and the lives of her children. Here are just a few of the positive effects:
- Sezounde is now working full time because her NVFS family advocate, Pam, connected her with childcare subsidy assistance through the county — meaning Sezounde could now enroll her kids in daycare.
- Sezounde now has health insurance because she is a full-time employee.
- Sezounde’s family now has their transportation: Pam not only helped Sezounde obtain her driver’s license but connected her with NVFS’ Vehicles for Change program — and in November 2016, Sezounde had her first car. Pam also helped Sezounde obtain two car seats for her children.
- Sezounde is now training to be a home-aide nurse.
Her children, too, thrived in the nurturing environment of Early Head Start and daycare, reaching critical developmental milestones. This story is a testament to the benefits of Head Start in empowering parents and setting children on a successful path, embodying NVFS’ commitment to fostering community empowerment and brighter futures.
96% of kids in the NVFS’ Head Start program reached developmental milestones in 2023.
