Providing the Gift of Fresh Produce for Guests at SERVE Shelter
Homeless Shelter
When Amy found herself with a little extra free time, she immediately knew that she wanted to use it to make a difference and giving back to her community. Her Google search brought her to Northern Virginia Family Service’s (NVFS) website, where she discovered NVFS’ SERVE Family Shelter.
“I went to NVFS because they seemed like a great organization that had many opportunities for me to help others,” said Amy. “I went willing to do anything that NVFS needed help with, and they asked me if I could tend to the gardens at the SERVE Family Shelter.”
Amy has been ensuring the garden is well-maintained and supplying produce for the guests at the shelter to enjoy.
“Giving people the chance to enjoy fresh produce and eat good, healthy meals is always a good thing,” shared Amy on why she shares her gardening talents with NVFS. “It meant a lot more when I saw how many families and children stayed at the SERVE shelter.”
Both the guests and staff at the SERVE Family Shelter are thankful for Amy’s contributions to the gardens. Not only is she assisting with enriching the guests’ meals, but she’s enriching the community by sharing her talents through her volunteer efforts.
“I want to encourage people to volunteer in any aspect that helps people and their communities. NVFS is a great organization and really tries to help people get back on their feet,” Amy concluded.
Thank you, Amy, for supporting NVFS!
"Knowing I am helping families eat healthy meals together is a good feeling."
